چکیده

In the present reprobiological study on Puntius filamentosus the spawning months of November and April coincided with North-East Monsoon (November) and South-West Monsoon (April) in India. The gross morphology of P. filamentosus showed 6 ovarian stages. The histological appearance of the ovaries showed ten stages (oogonia to atretic oocytes). The testes of Puntius filamentosus showed five morphological and histological stages each. The progression gonadal cycles of P. filamentosus collectively revealed that the maturation of males coincided with the maturation of females during the spawning period.

A Review of the Barbs of the Puntius Filamentosus Group (teleostei: Cyprinidae) of Southern India and Sri Lanka

The medium-sized barbs (< 115 mm SL) hitherto referred to Puntius filamentosus (Valenciennes, 1844) in southern India and Sri Lanka are among the most common cyprinids in the lowland rivers and reservoirs of these areas. They form an important part of the local food and ornamental fishery (Pethiyagoda, 1991; Talwar & Jhingran, 1991), and are easily recognised by the elongated, filament-like ext...

A long-lived life history for a tropical, deepwater snapper (Pristipomoides filamentosus): bomb radiocarbon and lead–radium dating as extensions of daily increment analyses in otoliths

Growth characteristics of Pristipomoides filamentosus, a deepwater eteline snapper of major economic importance, are incomplete and inconsistent across its geographical range. Early growth rates have been validated using daily increment and length–frequency analyses, but historical estimates of adult growth rates are variable and longevity is unknown. Studies of P. filamentosus in the Hawaiian ...

The Caenorhabditis elegans gonad: a test tube for cell and developmental biology.

Sexual reproduction of multicellular organisms depends critically on the coordinate development of the germ line and somatic gonad, a process known as gonadogenesis. Together these tissues ensure the formation of functional gametes and, in the female of many species, create a context for production and further development of the zygote. Since the future of the species hangs in the balance, it i...
